The 40th Annual Upper Peninsula Senior Citizen’s Convention and Expo will be held Thursday, September 18, 2008 from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. (EDT) in the Ruth Butler Exhibition Building at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba. This year we are “Celebrating the 1940’s” and will be paying tribute to our Armed Forces.
The convention is being co-sponsored by Marquette General Health Systems and the U.P. Area Agency on Aging/UPCAP, the annual coordinator of the event.
The morning’s activities will include several informational exhibits, health screenings, raffles, glamour shots, bingo with cash prizes, and a silent auction. Exhibitors will provide free blood pressure checks, oxygen testing, and other health screening. As always, information pertaining to all programs important to seniors will also be on hand.
Flu and pneumonia vaccines will also be available this year for a fee, but Medicare will be billed for those covered by Medicare Part B. People on Medicare wishing to participate in the immunization clinic should bring their Medicare card.
The afternoon’s general session will feature Dr. James Surrell from Marquette General Health Systems. Dr. Surrell, a Digestive Health Specialist, will speak to the group about cancer prevention. Additionally, Karen Salo from the YMCA will be demonstrating “armchair” exercises.
Topping off the event will be entertainment featuring “The Bright Spots” and Bill Moore. A costume contest is will be held for those who wear their best military attire or a 1940’s era costume. The first place winner will receive $100!
The convention registration fee is $7.00 per person. This includes a continental breakfast and a noon dinner featuring barbecued ribs, twice baked potatoes, cole slaw, and pineapple upside down cake.
